Stem Cells in Tissue Repair and Regeneration: Insights from Model Systems (Organized by Stem Cell Committee)

Stem cells contribute to regeneration in a wide range of tissues and our increasing understanding of stem cell biology raises the prospect that stem cells can be harnessed for therapeutic repair. However, some tissues exhibit limited endogenous regeneration. Such limits are not always equal across phylogeny, suggesting that understanding the factors making regeneration more permissive in lower vertebrates may provide insight into engineering cell and gene therapy to achieve therapeutic repair in humans. This session will survey our knowledge of stem cells and their contribution to repair and regeneration across various animal models.
